Barcelona Race update
Written by Luke
Wednesday, 04 June 2008
After testing at the Montmelo track I was really looking forward to this weekends racing, as its the first time i've returned to a track this season. I was also looking forward to racing, as I know I will learn more in a race environment that I would from just testing. Unfortunately the race did not happen. We had a technical fault with the bike during Friday's practice that forced us to withdraw from the weekend entirely its a real shame as everyone had worked so hard at the test and also to get the bike sorted. So i'm yet to see the start grid of a Spanish Superbike race!

The bike was not going to be ready for the Jerez test the following Wednesday however the team pulled out all the stops taking a brand new Kawasaki from the Puro Racing shop floor and prepping it to go testing. I'm really grateful for all their efforts as Jerez is a great track to ride at - and its also important for me to learn as the front riders know it well and are very fast. I made good progression with my times through the day, and although finished the day a little slower than I hoped it still puts us in a good position for the race in two weeks (June 13-15th)

I cant speak highly enough of the team and their efforts to get my out on track, everyone is positive and its a great atmosphere to ride in - we just need a little luck!

Montmelo test update

Luke Lawrence got his first taste of the Catalunya race circuit yesterday completing a days testing with the Inerzia Puro Racing Team in preparation for round 2 of the Spanish Superbike championship later this month.

"It was great to be back out on the bike yesterday, the team had worked very hard to get the bike ready for the test and I'm grateful to them for all their hard work. I'm really glad we tested at the Montmelo track, as it sure is a tricky one to learn! Its very fast in places and carrying high corner speed on a Superbike is quite exhilarating to say the least!

We made a few changes to the set-up and I managed to get allot of track time - which is just what I needed to learn the bike and circuit. It was tough getting the lap time down but I'm really looking forward to going back to Spain in two weeks for the next race.

We (Becky and I) managed to get a couple of days in Barcelona ahead of the test and I really like the area, its green and actually quite undulating compared to the Southern Spain I've seen before."

Crash damage prohibits Luke’s first Superbike race

Luke Lawrence crashed out of qualifying session 2 at the opening round of the Spanish Superbike championship on Saturday. Luke and two other riders crashed at over 120mph after hitting oil dropped by another bike. Damage to the Puro Racing Kawasaki Zx10 meant Luke was unable to race on Sunday 20th April.

“Things were really going to plan Saturday morning, following the over night changes the bike felt great and we shaved another 2 seconds off the lap time – with much more on the horizon. I finished the first qualification period in front of a local Spanish rider - something I was quite happy about!

A talk with the team between sessions and we found some areas I could improve on, including changing my riding position. Everything about riding a Superbike is different to the 250 – everything - and it’s putting all the pieces of the puzzle in place that brings the lap time down.

I started the second session on an old rear tyre, to get a feel for the slide of the bike – I pitted for fresh rear rubber and straight away was bettering my mornings pace – and still only warming up!

I crashed at a 4th gear turn, which I actually thought was quite a slow corner (in comparison to other parts of the track) but I can tell you once off the bike it did not feel slow at all!

I was head over heels hard and fast through the gravel banging my head three or four times in the process. My HJC crash helmet worked perfectly and I was able to get up and walk across to the marshals, within seconds another rider went down, and then another followed him, it was clear that there was something on the track. A bike had dropped a line of oil across the turn.

The marshal’s red flagged the session in order to clear the track up, and that was it – weekend over for me! I was unhurt, but the bike had taken quite a knock. (My thanks to HJC Helmets, Held gloves, Daytona Boots and MJK Leathers for their ultimate levels of protection) When the second bike came into the gravel it hit mine and that caused a fair bit of damage - So unfortunately we had to call the weekend short.

Despite the crash the weekend was a big positive - , the championship really is first class, the team all bond really well and I started to understand how to ride the Superbike. Changing 250 habits that I've developed over 6 years of racing them is very hard - and the two styles couldn't be more different!

I’m really looking forward to testing in Barcelona in two weeks time; it will give me a better advantage for the race meeting in May, and quite simply – I just can’t wait to get out on a Superbike again!

Luke rides a Superbike!
Written by Luke
Monday, 21 April 2008
Luke completed his first laps for the Puro Racing team today at the Cheste circuit – Valencia

“To say it’s exciting is an understatement – this bike is FAST. I mean 250’s feel quick through the turns, but this thing is an animal. Straight away we’re topping 175mph and that’s a lot of speed to understand.

The bike feels very good, much more ride-able that I thought a Superbike would be. But the big thing for me so far this weekend is the team, I’m really happy with Inerzia Puro Racing Team – everyone is very cool and there is such a positive outlook. I’m more motivated than I have ever been to race, its going to be a great season.

On a bike front I’m learning every lap. It’s never ideal to go straight into racing something new – and especially at a new track, on a new bike, having only ridden once in the last 6 months!! But it’s going well so far. I’ll post more details tomorrow as we run into qualifying.”

LUKE LAWRENCE - SUPERBIKE RIDER!
Written by Luke
Wednesday, 09 April 2008
Luke Lawrence has recently signed to ride a 1000cc Kawasaki Zx10 Superbike in the prestigious Spanish Superbike championship – CEV Formula Extreme.

Luke has been one of the most proficient British 250cc Grand Prix racers of recent years, winning at a national level and contesting the UEM European championship with 'wildcard card' rides at Moto GP world championship events.

Luke - "I'm really excited about this new challenge, I've raced 250's for 6 years and enjoyed every lap - however its now time for a new challenge. The Inerzia Puro racing team are very professional and have run a Kawasaki Superbike for some years - so it’s really exciting to be part of something big!

My goal for 2008 will be to score points, the Formula Extreme championship is one of the fiercest fought in the world, so it will be tough fighting into the top 15 – but I’m up for the challenge!"

The opening round of the CEV championship (www.motocev.com) will be April 20th at Valencia.

Change of class for Luke.....?

HOT NEWS - Luke Lawrence has been reviewing an offer in the ultra Competitive Spanish Superbike Championship - CEV Buckler (WWW.MOTOCEV.COM)

Please watch this space to catch up on all the details in the coming weeks!

Luke is seen below testing Darren (Moggy) Moggridges Yamaha R1 at a snowy Silverstone, Northhants on Bank Holiday Monday.

"My apologies for all the mystery, but more details will follow on the site as things get confirmed - but what I can say is that I tested a Superbike at Silverstone to get the feel for a big bike last Monday.

We arrived at Silverstone and it was zero degrees - I started questioning the working temperature of slicks as we drove into the track, only to see that snow had settled all over the track!! Luckily as the day went on the snow melted but the conditions were far from perfect to learn a 1000cc Superbike!!

I got a decent amount of laps in on the bike, and man it pulls like a train. They arent called SUPERbikes for nothing. I was hitting 180mph + on the hanger straight and thats with it spinning up on the puddles and a bit of aqua planing!!!

MANY thanks to Moggy for the use of his bike, and to my girlfriend Becky and Darrens wife Eleanor for standing around in the cold all day watching - no fun!!!!"

Daytona boots will continue to sponsor Luke in his race efforts in 2008

Luke will contest the 2008 Spanish Superbike championship in a pair of top of the range, custom coloured Evo race boot.

"I've used Daytona boots for some years now and they really are the best boot money can buy. Its important to have your hands and feet well protected in racing - lots of little bones to look after - and I trust Daytona's protection 100%

They also look trick in your own colours, so i'm chuffed for Frey Daytona to continue their support this season!"
